Dear Patients and Friends,
I have been told that many of you are wondering how I am doing. Well, a short summary of events may help give a more complete picture of my condition.
In early March I was feeling perfectly fine, but proceeded with a routine physical. I asked for a carotid artery ultrasound and an echo stress test because I needed a baseline for future comparison—I was 67 years old and had a family history of heart problems. I had about 70 or so separate blood tests, and all but 2 were in normal ranges. My total cholesterol was somewhat raised, and my LDL had risen to 225 (from 60 two years prior to this.) The carotid artery test results were o.k., but the echo test results were ominous. I was given the word, “Dr. Newman, you need a heart catheterization—soon.” The cath was done and the results showed several very serious blockages in my heart arteries (some 95-99%) and some in areas where stints would not be effective. I was given 3 by-pass grafts (CABG).
Surgery and recovery have been without complications. At this time I am in heart-rehab, which means I walk a lot.
My future plans are to return to work on May 17, beginning with a light schedule. Eventually I plan to be working 3 full days per week.
Pam and I want to thank all of you for your prayers, food, cards and visits at the hospital and at our home. I also want to thank Dr. Mikulak and our staff (Barbara, Becky, Tami, Melinda and Karen) for stepping up to the plate and taking over the operation of Newman Chiropractic in this emergency situation.
I have been given a chance to continue life without a heart attack and the subsequent damage, and without symptoms. Praise God.
Dr. Royce Newman
